Where to stay

You can get the latest information about accommodation in Viengxay from the Viengxay Caves Visitor Centre.

There are several family run guesthouses and homestays in Viengxay. The one hotel, now privately owned, was built after the ceasefire in 1973 as the Government Guest House, and was used to welcome visiting dignitaries and officials to the liberated zone.

Eating and drinking

You can enjoy freshly cooked traditional Lao food at guesthouse restaurants and at market cafes. Bamboo shoots and steamed vegetables served with a spicy dipping sauce are favourite dishes of the people in Houaphanh. There are some other specialities of the area – such as deep fried caterpillars, crickets and steamed wasp pupa - that you might also enjoy tasting.

In smaller guesthouses in Viengxay it is a good idea to order dinner or lunch in advance, so that they can have time to buy fresh supplies from the market and prepare your meal. You can also order a picnic to take out. 'Western' style breakfasts are served at most guesthouses. Drinking water and flasks of hot tea are always available - very welcome in the chilly Houaphanh winter. Supplies of the ever popular BeerLao are always available, along with locally brewed spirits.

Markets, shops and money matters

Drinks, fruit, snacks, phone cards and other supplies are on sale every day at Viengxay market and small shops around the town. You can buy food for a picnic for your exploration of the area.

There is no bank in Viengxay, but small amounts of foreign currency can be changed locally and may be accepted at guesthouses. The nearest banks and credit card facilities are in Xamneua.
